Ahuriri is an area of unique character.
It is of special significance to the tangata whenua, being the outlet to the Whanganui-a-Orotu estuary and having once been an important landing place for waka (Maori canoes).
It was one of the earliest settled areas in Napier, and its importance for New Zealand grew as the port developed. Today, the Port of Napier is located at Bluff Hill but Ahuriri is still used by local commercial fishing fleets.
Like many wharf developments around the world, Ahuriri is booming. Old waterside buildings and warehouses are being revitalised into a hub of cafes and restaurants and the beautiful, sheltered harbour and estuary are a magnet for P-class yachts, kayaks, swimmers and water-sport enthusiasts.
Ahuriri Estuary is an important wetland area with a diverse range of bird life including the Sandpiper, Caspian Tern, Godwit and Pacific Golden Plover. Wonderful walkways have been developed around the estuary and lagoon, providing opportunities for bird-watching, photography, picnicking, hiking and running. Ahuriri Estuary is also an important nursery area for fish. Twenty-nine species of fish have been recorded, including the Short-finned eel, flounder and mullet.
